Marketplace expands the radius when local inventory is sparse — silently, with no notification
Facebook Marketplace distance filter not working?
You set a radius. Marketplace ignored it. Listings from 40, 60, even 80 miles away keep showing up in a feed that should be local. This is not a bug in your settings — it is how Marketplace handles distance. MarketClean adds a strict browser-side limit that actually holds.

The built-in radius is a preference, not a hard cutoff.
listings from significantly further away appear and bury nearby inventory
resetting the radius doesn't reliably remove far-away listings already loaded
the distance shown on each card is accurate — the issue is Marketplace chose to show it despite your filter
Facebook treats your radius as a suggestion, not a wall.
Relevance over proximity
- Marketplace prioritizes filling your feed with results over respecting your distance setting.
- When few listings exist nearby for your search, it quietly pulls in items from further away.
- This is especially common for specific or niche searches in less-populated areas.
Distance shown vs distance enforced
- Each listing card shows the actual distance from your location to the seller.
- A listing showing "47 miles" with a 25-mile filter set is not a bug — Marketplace chose to include it.
- The distance data is accurate. The filtering is what fails to hold.
Known reasons the built-in filter fails to hold.
Sparse local inventory
- When few listings exist within your set radius, Marketplace automatically widens the search area.
- This happens silently — no notification, no indicator that the radius has changed.
- Changing the radius back often reloads far-away results anyway.
Server-side vs browser behavior
- The Marketplace radius setting is a server-side preference, not a hard filter applied to every result.
- Listings may be fetched before your location preference is applied or updated.
- Refreshing the page or re-entering a search sometimes brings back the same far results.
What you can try within Facebook (and why it usually falls short).
Reset the radius to a tighter value and refresh the page — may temporarily reduce far results
Update your location or city in Facebook settings — helps if your saved location is outdated
Clear browser cache and re-open Marketplace — sometimes removes stale distance results
Try a different or broader search term — reduces the chance Marketplace needs to expand the radius to fill results
These steps help in some cases. None of them prevent Marketplace from expanding the radius again in later sessions — the behavior is built into how Marketplace generates results.
A strict browser-side distance limit that actually holds.
reads the distance shown on each listing card and compares it to your limit
hides any listing beyond your chosen range before you see it
works independently of Marketplace's own filter — even if it expands the radius, MarketClean still enforces yours
applies filtering continuously as new listings load while scrolling
supports miles and kilometres with configurable fallback for city-name listings

Distance filter questions buyers ask
Why does the Facebook Marketplace distance filter not work?
The Facebook Marketplace distance filter is a server-side preference, not a hard cutoff that applies to every result. When local inventory within your chosen radius is sparse, Marketplace silently expands the search area and includes listings from further away. No indicator appears in the feed to signal that the radius has changed. Even after resetting the radius to a tighter value, far-away listings from the same session may persist until you reload the page. This is not a bug you can fix in your account settings — it is how Marketplace handles distance by design.
Why is Facebook Marketplace showing listings so far away?
Marketplace treats your distance setting as a suggestion rather than a wall. When the feed has room — for example, when searching for a specific item in a less-populated area — it pulls in listings from beyond your radius to fill results. The distance displayed on each listing card is accurate: a listing showing "62 miles" really is 62 miles away. The issue is that Marketplace chose to show it despite your preference. This is expected behavior from Facebook's side, not a bug that can be fixed through account settings.
Can MarketClean fix the distance filter problem?
Yes. MarketClean applies a separate distance check directly in your browser, independent of whatever Marketplace's own filter does. It reads the distance label shown on each listing card and hides any listing that exceeds your limit. Because this runs in your browser rather than on Facebook's servers, it is not affected by Marketplace's radius-expansion behavior. If Marketplace includes a listing from 80 miles away in a 25-mile search, MarketClean hides it before you see it.
Can I make Marketplace only show nearby listings?
MarketClean can enforce a strict distance limit on what you see, even when Marketplace includes far-away listings. You can set MarketClean to 15 miles while Marketplace has its filter at 40 miles, and listings from 16 to 40 miles will be hidden. Settings persist between sessions. For listings that show a city name instead of a distance number, you can set a fallback center city so MarketClean can estimate the distance.
What happens to listings that don't show a distance?
You can choose to keep them visible, fade them, or hide them. You can also set a fallback center city so MarketClean can estimate distance from the city name shown on a listing.
Does MarketClean change my Facebook settings?
No. MarketClean only adds a filtering layer in your browser. It does not interact with or modify any settings on Facebook.
Does distance filtering apply to new listings as I scroll?
Yes. MarketClean watches for new listings as they load and applies filtering continuously throughout your session.
